Overview: Pre-licensure Written Exams

The written examinations are administered in March and September at test sites in the United States, Canada, England, France, Australia and New Zealand. Examinations include Part I, Part II, Part III, Physiotherapy, and Acupuncture. The NBCE also offers a computerized assessment test for prospective chiropractic students called CCAT.

Part I: A basic science subjects examination covering general anatomy, spinal anatomy, physiology, chemistry, pathology, and microbiology and public health.

Part II: A clinical science subjects examination covering general diagnosis, neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, principles of chiropractic, chiropractic practice, and associated clinical sciences.

Part III: A written clinical competency examination that addresses case history, physical examination, neuromusculoskeletal examination, roentgenologic examination, clinical laboratory and special studies, diagnosis or clinical impression, chiropractic technique, supportive techniques, and case management.

Physiotherapy: An elective examination assessing physical therapy modalities, their indications, contraindications and applications, and therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation.

Acupuncture: An elective examination assessing history and philosophy of acupuncture, organs, qi and fluid, channels and pathways, acupoints, acupuncture techniques, basic treatment and protocols, and acupuncture safety and hygiene.

Chiropractic College Assessment Test (CCAT): An assessment for prospective students of chiropractic or other health care professions. The CCAT provides the prospective student and his/her school with measures of ability problem solving skills, quantitative reasoning skills, biology, chemistry, and physics. To enroll for CCAT, click here.

Chiropractic colleges do not make admissions decisions based on assessment scores. Chiropractic colleges primarily use CCAT results to identify areas in which they may recommend or offer curriculum modifications.

For more information about CCAT, contact Dr. Martin Kollasch.

Certificate of Attainment: Following successful completion of Parts I, II, III and IV, examinees receive a Certificate of Attainment free of charge from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Although the NBCE certificate is generally recognized by state licensing
authorities, each state imposes unique requirements for licensure, which are subject to change. Examinees should contact the licensing authority in the state(s) in which they desire to practice to obtain current information on licensure requirements and privileges afforded to those who hold the NBCE certificate. The NBCE issues a separate certificate upon successful completion of the Acupuncture Examination and/or the Physiotherapy Examination.

Certificate recipients may, for an additional fee, order an engraved plaque. Order forms for this purpose are included with examinee grade
letters. Examinees must observe order-form deadlines on this limited offer.
